Moissanite was first found in 1893 by Henri Moissan, in fragments of a meteorite. Today it is grown in a lab, and it has a higher refractive index and stronger dispersion than diamond. In practice, that means intense brilliance and more fire: flashes of red, orange and green that move across the facets as you do. In soft light it glows. In direct light it comes alive.

What is moissanite?
Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide. It was first discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in fragments of a meteorite and is now grown in a lab for jewellery. It isn't glass or cubic zirconia. It has its own gemmological properties and is very hard, at 9.25 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratching well.

Does moissanite sparkle more than a diamond?
In measurable terms, moissanite shows more fire. Its refractive index is 2.65 to 2.69, compared with 2.42 for diamond, and its dispersion is more than twice as high. You'll see more rainbow flashes, especially in direct light. Whether you prefer that to a diamond's cooler sparkle is personal taste.

How big is a 1 carat moissanite?
The Amélie's stone measures about 6.5mm across. That's the same face-up size as a classic 1 carat round diamond. It's clearly visible at the neckline without feeling oversized.

What does the GRA certificate show?
The GRA certificate records the moissanite's grading details, which typically include colour, clarity, cut and measurements. Each Amélie comes with its own certificate. Keep it in the Signature Case with your necklace.

Where does the Amélie necklace sit?
At 40cm, it rests at the base of the neck on most people. With the 5cm extension, it can drop to about 45cm and sit closer to the collarbone.

How do I clean a moissanite necklace?
Skin oils and lotion can cloud the stone over time. Soak the pendant briefly in warm water with a drop of mild soap, brush gently behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and pat dry. Wipe the chain gently. Heavy polishing can wear down the rhodium plating.

Will the sterling silver tarnish?
The moissanite won't tarnish, but the silver setting and chain can darken over time. Rhodium plating also wears gradually with regular use, often faster in humid weather. Keep the necklace away from perfume, lotion and chlorine, and store it dry in its case. A jeweller can re-plate the silver when the shine softens.

Can I shower or swim with the Amélie?
